National-centric polls: a misleading compass for EU-wide election.

  • Polls are the compass of elections. They give the direction of debates, and may have huge impact on the outcome of elections.

  • It is of the utmost importance for the polls to be accurate and relevant.

  • Using national-centric polls leads to debate around national topics. This is what most media do, like the graph opposite:

  • Why use national-centric poll for a European-wide parliament? The national outcome will be diluted by the outcomes from 26 other participating countries.

A negligence weakening national influence in the EU Parliament... in fine the voters' choice.

  • This may lead to weak representation in the parliament.

  • French voters decided to send the smallest proportion of their representatives in the two largest and most important groups in the EU Parliament...

  • ...weakening France influence, despite having the 2nd largest delegation of MEPs.

The reality in the EU Parliament, how polls should be presented...A real game changer.

  • French MEPs cannot exert all the potential that institutions gave them. Concentrated in secondary groups, French MEPs representations are too small in the largest ones.

  • The importance of presenting polls in the context of the EU parliament will be key to re-direct the debates in the campaign as this will trigger new series of questions.

  • Voters will have a better understanding of what is really at stake.

  • Forcing journalists, pollsters to adapt their tools, questions and comments to EU-wide questions, France interests in EU, beyond sole domestic agendas.

  • Politicians will have to adapt their strategy: plan for the right EU agenda and coordinate more tightly their alliance with European peers.
